Q: What is the difference between onsite and offsite backups?
Basically, remote backups work like regular tape, or other media backups, with one important difference. Instead of sending backups to a tape drive or other media attached to the computer being backed up, a remote backup sends encrypted file data over the internet to our secure servers safely off-site. This eliminates the possibility that the same catastrophe that damaged the computer would also destroy your important data. The backups always happen at night while your business is closed and nobody is using the computers. It's completely automatic and you don’t need to do anything. Just leave your computers and servers on and lock your doors.

Q: Why are remote backups considered more beneficial?
The data is immediately stored off-site using an automated backup system. Also, only an internet connection is needed. Completely eliminating the need for expensive backup equipment and media. And, since the system is automated, manual labor is eliminated.

Q: What if we already have a tape, or other media backup system?
Using a tape backup system and a remote backup system offers the best of both worlds. Critical files, like billing, customer contact files and databases can be kept on the remote backup system. While, the tape system can be used to create a full backup of the entire system once or twice a month, instead of on a daily basis. The tapes and drive will last longer and require less maintenance. The RDS system can provide a quick and easy way to retrieve critical files and databases without the hassle of searching through tapes.

Q: How long will a remote backup take?
The amount of time it takes to run a backup depends on several factors; the amount of data being backed up, the compression rate of the data, and the internet connection speed. After the initial upload of the customer's data the incremental backups will run much quicker. Remember, we run the backupsat night when no one is in your office so as not to impact your working day.

Q: How secure are remote backups?
Extremely secure. All files are encrypted using the latest encryption technology including XXX, XXX, and XXXX encryption which is selected by the customer with their own personal encryption code which is only known by that customer.

Q: What is encryption?
Encryption is basically a mathematical formula that scrambles a data file. And the only way to unscramble it is with the encryption code.

Q: Does LAN DOCTORS have access to my files?
No, your files are compressed and encrypted before they even leave your computer. Only your encryption code can unlock your files.

Q: What if something happens to your backup system system where our data is stored?
LAN DOCTORS has something called redundancy. That means that we are actually backing up your files to our secure server and then backing them up again on another secure server. The chance of all of these systems going down is extremely rare and almost unheardof. But in the unlikely event something catastrophic happened, LAN DOCTORS also carries a $3MM liability insurance policy.

Q: How do I know for sure that you are really backing up all of our data?
LAN DOCTORS will email you a monthly service report detailing how much data was backed up for your account.
